The musical group Os velhos Guris was created during music therapy activities coordinated by the music therapist Claudimara Zanchetta. The group is formed by seven elders from Recanto do Tarumã. In September 2004 they recorded a CD with eleven songs. The CD is sold at Socorro aos Necessitados for only R$10,00.
Due to the diversity of the members of the group, their repertory is vast, from samba-canção to country music. The most important thing of the project is making the elders realize that the elderliness is just another phase of life, full of stories to tell, to sing, and that they still have much time to live happily, with quality of life and dignity, for as the spirit and the dreams never grow old.
The Music Therapy
Music Therapy is a new activity in Recanto do Tarumã rest home. It started in early July 2003. It is a treatment which uses movements and sonorous elements as a means of communication, expression, and organization of the individual, with the intent of emancipating contents that need to be explored and providing well being (mental and physical health) and equilibrium with the environment.
The main objectives are: providing a space where one can express oneself; providing enjoyable moments through singing and dancing; improving the communication; integrating the residents of the home so that they can find that each one of them is a very special person with much potential.
Since then a new group of work has arisen, which was later called Os velhos Guris. Nowadays they spend some hours rehearsing for the presentations in events of the own institution or others.

Afoxé is an
Afro Brazilian musical instrument composed of a
gourd wrapped in a net in which beads are threaded. The instrument is shaken to produce its musical noise.
